Unpopular Opinion about White Culture

Alright, I’m going to say some things in this post that will most likely lose me some followers, but this needs to be said and we need to discuss it. 

Mass shootings are something almost exclusive to white people in the United States. Save the VA Tech shooting, every other mass shooting has been committed by white men. This is a white problem. White people, we need to address this issue because I have a hard time accepting the ‘mental illness’ rhetoric when statistically people suffering from mental illness are more likely to be victims of violent crimes than perpetrators. I also think focusing so much on mental illness is just more ableism. 

This issue of mass shootings has personally affected my life. I grew up mere miles from both Columbine and the Aurora shootings. I know people whose lives were personally impacted from these tragedies. This is MY community. This is a white, middle class problem and we need to start owning this. If this slaughtering of humans in public spaces was being carried out by people of colour, you better believe we’d have some sort of profile or dialogue about it.

I didn’t even need the identity of the shooter today to know it was a white man, but for some reason no one has mentioned this epidemic being unique to white people. 

There is a culture of violence that runs through our veins, regardless of race or socioeconomic status. We’ve studied the correlation of poverty and violence. But we haven’t been discussing what compels middle class white men to open fire on innocents beyond calling them outliers and pointing to mental illness. 

Those don’t satisfy me. I have some theories and they center around privilege and entitlement and not having resources to cope with injustice when all one has ever known is privilege.
